In 1949, the Monaco post issued a set of stamps, one of which is dedicated to the
palaeo-anthropological institute of this small state. The illustration shows an aurochs
from the famous Lascaux cave. It is a bit of a borderline case, but I have decided to include it here. Although the aurochs became extinct in historic times, it has a good palaeontological record. The stone age men that created the West European cave painting belong to Homo sapiens, but lived in prehistoric times. ![]() |
